Compassion forms the basis of my practice
The labyrinth is a walking meditation, a path of prayer and an archetypal blueprint where psyche meets Spirit. It has only one path that leads from the outer edge in a circuitous way to the center. There are no tricks to it and no dead ends. Unlike a maze where you lose your way, the labyrinth is a spiritual tool that can help you find your way.
Walking the Labyrinth quiets the mind, opens the heart and grounds the body ... Some find answers to questions long asked, some find healing, creativity, a sense of wholeness ... What will you find on your labyrinth journey?

I build on an ancient informal tradition of creative expression among soldiers. All military cultures through history and today have an informal tradition of creative expression. Soldiers have used creative outlets such as writing, singing, drawing and even cooking as a distraction, an entertainment, a bonding experience or a way to make sense of the inexplicable horror of war. Many soldiers went on after their military service to continue their creativity either privately or professionally.
The practices of compassion, mindfulness and creative expression are about healing. Compassion and Mindfulness are how we connect or reconnect with our inner selves and open ourselves to new possibilities and a brighter future. Creativity is about finding that inner voice in all of us and listening to what it has to share. It is about finding new ways to tell our stories of trauma and growing from that experience.
Your breath is one of the most important bodily functions you perform that you also take for granted. It is directly related to your emotional state and your health. Your breath is also one of the ways you naturally inhale energy and it is the best way to enter into a mindful state which then facilitates compassion.
Your breath is both a gateway and a mirror to your inner self. It is the entry point to mindfulness. As a gateway your breath can help you reconnect with your inner self, that observer part of your consciousness that exists below the thinker that can take up so much of your mental energy. In connecting with your inner self through breathing you can learn to relax and manage stress much more effectively and even gain more personal insight from your own intuition.
Most of us breath unconsciously most of our lives, and in this state our breathing is a reflection of our physical and metal health. When we are stressed our breathing become rapid and shallow. However when we breath consciously we regain a connection with ourselves that allows us to bring our breath back to a healthy slow deep state that facilitates the grounding connection.
Cartography of the Soul is a newsletter I publish on substack that is aimed at people like you and me, spiritual misfits and rogues looking for a path to deepen their inner journey but struggle with many of the conventional teachings. People who might be skeptical or simply unsure about compassion and what role it plays in our deeper inner journey. We know that life is not soft a squishy. We've had our struggles, we recognize our trauma but we are still looking for our people, our tribe. We know that kindness and compassion are part of this inner spiritual journey but practicing these is difficult in this life. My goal is to share with you my own thoughts and experience of another side of compassion, the tough side the courageous side, the fierce side, the side you might relate to, and how it can help you live a better life.
I see kindness and compassion as the light that guides us out of the dark place we call suffering and Cartography of the Soul is my way of sharing that light and wisdom with you.
Cartography of the Soul began life as The Compassion Project as part of my training at Stanford University's Applied Compassion Training where we were asked to create a capstone project. This is my project.
